Turning fasteners with no swing 10

The core problem. Count the degrees of movement you have and pick the mechanism that fits it.

Cutting with no clearance 6

A pipe already fixed against a wall or through a joist. The question is how far the tool has to rotate.

Joining without a flame 6

A tight space is usually a bad place for a torch. These make a joint with no heat at all.

Most of this work is done by feel. These are the tools that make it less blind.

Working in a confined space

Measure the clearance before you buy anything. The question is always how many degrees of swing you have, not how strong the tool is.

The limit is usually swing, not strength

Before buying anything, work out how many degrees the tool can turn. A standard ring spanner needs 60 degrees to move a hex to the next flat. A 12 point ring needs 30. A ratchet ring needs about 5.

That is the whole hierarchy of access tools. When there is no room to swing at all, the answer is not a stronger tool but a different mechanism: a ratchet, a pass through socket, or a flexible drive.

Six point spanner or socket. Best grip and the most room needed.

Twelve point ring. Half the swing, slightly less grip on a tight fastener.
5 degrees
Ratchet ring or a fine tooth ratchet. Where a swing is barely possible at all.

Short tools and long tools both help

Two opposite problems come up. Sometimes there is no depth, so a stubby screwdriver or a low profile ratchet is what fits. Sometimes the fitting is a long way back, so a telescopic or extended tool is the only way to reach it.

The under sink case is often both at once: the nut is 400mm back and there is 60mm of height. That combination is exactly what a basin wrench was designed for, and it is why nothing else does its job.

No depth
Stubby drivers, low profile ratchets, right angle attachments. Height is the constraint.
No reach
Telescopic and extended tools, long basin wrenches, flexible extensions.
Both at once
The under sink problem. A basin wrench is long, thin and works at an angle by feel.
Consider dismantling
Taking a trap or a panel off often gains more than any tool. Ten minutes for an hour saved.

You usually cannot see the work

Most confined space plumbing is done by feel, and the tools that help most are the ones that let you see: a head torch, an inspection mirror, and an inspection camera for anything inside a wall or a void.

A camera sounds excessive for domestic work until the first time it saves cutting an access hatch in a tiled wall. Knowing which of three pipes is weeping before you open anything is worth the cost of the tool once.

Confined spaces and hot work

A tight space is often also a bad place for a torch: a joist bay, a boxed duct, a cupboard lined with insulation. Heat has nowhere to go and you cannot see behind the joint you are heating.

This is the strongest practical argument for compression, push fit and press joints. On a repair inside a stud wall, a push fit coupling made in thirty seconds with no flame is safer and faster than a soldered joint made blind next to timber.

Working on your back

Half of this work is done lying in a cupboard or kneeling on a bathroom floor, and how long you can hold that position decides how carefully the last connection gets made. That makes a kneeling pad and a torch genuine tools rather than comforts.

It also argues for assembling as much as possible outside the space. Fitting tails, washers and isolators onto a tap on the worktop takes two minutes; doing the same blind under a basin takes twenty.

Everything you can fit on the bench first is time not spent working blind.

Once you are under a sink you cannot get up for the thing you forgot without losing your position.
