Six tools that between them can build something real. Sized down, and every one of them a working tool rather than a representation of one.

Holding the work 6

Choosing tools a child can really use

Weight and length matter more than sharpness. A blunt tool that needs force is more dangerous than a sharp one that does not.

Real tools, smaller

Plastic tools teach nothing, and they frustrate a child quickly because they do not work. A small real saw cuts wood; a plastic one drags and then the child concludes they cannot saw.

What makes a tool suitable for a child is scale. A 16oz hammer is too heavy for a seven year old to place accurately, so they swing harder to compensate and hit their fingers. An 8oz hammer at the same length solves the problem entirely without being any less real.

Short handles
Less leverage means less force, which is the point. A shorter handle is a safety feature, not a compromise.

A blunt tool is the more dangerous one

This is the least intuitive thing on the page and the most important. A sharp chisel bites into the wood and stays where it is put. A blunt one skates off the surface and travels, usually toward the hand holding the work.

So keeping a child's tools sharp is a safety measure, not an indulgence. The same is true of saws: a blunt saw needs pushing, and a saw being pushed jumps out of its kerf.

Clamp the work, always

Most injuries in a workshop happen to the hand holding the workpiece rather than the hand holding the tool. For a child this is even more true, because they have less strength to hold something still and less experience of where a tool will go if it slips.

A vice or a couple of clamps removes that hand from the equation entirely. It is the single most effective thing you can do, and it costs less than most of the tools on this page.

The other hand is the risk
Clamping removes it from the danger area completely, which no amount of care does.
A bench hook is enough
For sawing, a bench hook gives the work a stop to push against. It can be made from scrap in ten minutes.
Teach it as the first step
Clamp, then cut. Learned early it becomes automatic, which is the whole point.

Supervision is the safety measure

No tool on this page is safe for an unsupervised child, and nothing sold as a children's tool changes that. Saws cut, chisels cut, and hammers break fingers, at any size.

What varies enormously is readiness, and it varies by child far more than by age. Some six year olds saw carefully with a bench hook; some ten year olds do not yet have the patience to keep their fingers clear. Watch the individual child rather than reading an age off a box.

Supervised means present
In the room and watching, not within earshot. Most incidents happen in the minute nobody is looking.
One tool at a time
Learn the saw, then add the chisel. A bench full of options is a bench full of distractions.
Readiness, not age
Judge the child in front of you. Age printed on packaging tells you about liability, not about them.
Eye protection
Cheap, and the only injury on this list that cannot be repaired.

What makes a good first project

Something finished in one sitting, made from soft wood, using two or three tools. A bird box, a simple shelf, a stool. The point is completion, because a project abandoned half done teaches the opposite of what you wanted.

Softwood is not a compromise either. Pine cuts easily with a small saw and takes a nail without splitting if you drill a pilot hole, and it is cheap enough that a spoiled piece does not matter.
