Holding the work 9

Buy this group first. Every other tool on the page assumes the workpiece is rigid, and hands cannot make it so.

  • Engineer's vice: A heavy cast iron engineers bench vice with serrated hardened steel jaws and a long screw handleEssential

    Heavy cast body with hardened serrated jaws that hold steel rigidly enough to be filed, sawn and tapped. Mass is what stops it flexing, so a heavy small vice beats a light large one every time.

    Wide flat jaws faced with wood, mounted under the bench so its top is flush with the surface. It grips a board across its width without bruising it, which serrated metal jaws cannot do.

    Tightened by a pistol trigger with one hand, which matters when the other hand is holding the joint together. Less force than a screw clamp, and far quicker for positioning and dry fitting.

    A board with a stop at each end that hooks over the bench edge, giving a saw something to work against. Costs nothing to make and is the reason a tenon saw cut goes where you intended.

    A blade fixed at 90 degrees to a stock, for marking square lines and testing an edge. Check it by scribing, flipping and scribing again: two diverging lines mean the square is wrong and so is everything made with it.

    A pin or wheel on a beam set at a distance from a fence, scoring a line parallel to an edge. It repeats the same distance every time, which no rule and pencil combination reliably does.

    A single bevel blade that severs fibres along the line, leaving a wall for a chisel or saw to register in. A pencil line is several times wider, and its width is enough to spoil a joint.

    A blade that locks at any angle, for copying an angle from the work rather than measuring it. Most angles in real repairs are not round numbers, which is what makes this more useful than a protractor.

    For anything longer than a rule. The hook is deliberately loose by the thickness of itself so inside and outside readings both come out right, which is why a tight hook makes a tape read wrong.

    Reads outside, inside and depth to a hundredth of a millimetre. It answers the questions a rule cannot: whether a hole is 12mm or 12.4mm, and whether a shoulder is even across its width.

    Sets a bench, a shelf or a machine flat and plumb. A workshop built on an out of level bench transfers that error into everything assembled on it, quietly and permanently.

    All steel, ground to a closer tolerance than a woodworking square, for setting machines and checking metal. This is the square the other squares get checked against, which is its real job.

Cutting and shaping 10

The tools most people buy first and should buy third. Each one assumes the previous two groups are already in place.

    A general wood saw around 550mm at about 10 TPI, for cutting boards to length. Short enough to control and store, fine enough that the sawn edge needs little cleaning up.

    A stiffened back stops the thin blade flexing, so the cut lands exactly where marked. That rigidity is the whole reason joints are possible, and it is what a panel saw cannot offer.

    Cuts metal, plastic and anything else a wood saw would blunt on. A workshop needs one because sooner or later something has to be shortened and it will not be timber.

    A sprung frame with a thin rotatable blade for curves and for removing waste inside a shape. It is also the cheapest way to make a curved cut at all without a powered saw.

    Flat blades with bevelled sides that reach into acute corners, pared or struck with a mallet. A 6mm and a 25mm cover most work, and the set of six is mostly sizes that stay in the box.

    A small one-handed plane for trimming end grain, easing an edge and fitting a joint. The most used plane in most workshops, because it is the one you pick up without clearing the bench first.

    A bench plane around 250mm long that takes a fine shaving to finish a surface. It leaves a face no abrasive matches, because it slices the fibres flat rather than scratching them.

    Cuts metal on the push stroke, taking an edge down to a line. Second cut at 250mm is the one that earns bench space, and it must always be fitted with a handle over its bare tang.

    A replaceable blade in a rigid handle, and the most used cutting tool in any workshop. Snap the blade off the moment it drags: a blunt one needs force, and force is how it slips.

    Individually raised teeth that tear wood away quickly, for shaping a curve before finer tools. It removes material far faster than any file and leaves a surface that will need every one of them afterwards.

Striking and fastening 10

Putting things together and taking them apart. Face hardness is what separates these, and it is not visible.

    Drives and pulls nails, at 16oz for general use. Its face is deliberately softer than a punch, so it should never be used to strike hardened tools however convenient that is.

    The hardened faced hammer, and the correct tool whenever the target is another steel tool. A punch or cold chisel struck with anything softer risks chipping the hammer rather than the work.

    A heavy wooden head for driving chisels and assembling joints without damaging either. The large soft face spreads the blow, which is why a chisel handle survives a mallet and splits under a hammer.

    Moves a part without marking it, for seating a joint or persuading an assembly into line. It has real mass but a face softer than anything you are likely to be hitting.

    Flat, Phillips and Pozidriv in several sizes. Matching the tip to fill the head is what stops it camming out, and most stripped screws are a size mismatch rather than a hard screw.

    Serrated flat jaws, a pipe grip and a cutter in one tool. Not the best at any of the three, and the one that gets picked up when you do not yet know what the job needs.

    Fits any size within its range, at the cost of gripping only two faces with some play. Always pull so the load falls on the fixed jaw, because the moving jaw is the part that lets go.

    For socket head screws, which hold together most machinery and flat pack furniture. A genuinely graduated set is one of the few cases where buying the whole set makes sense.

  • A steel nail punch with a knurled body and a small cupped tipEssential

    Sets a nail head below the surface so it can be filled. It also means the last hammer blow lands on the punch rather than on the timber, which is what prevents the crescent dent.

  • A pair of carpenters pincers with rounded jaws and curved handles

    Pincers

    Rounded jaws that grip a nail head close to the surface and lever it out by rolling on the cheek. They remove a headless or bent nail that a claw hammer cannot get under.

Sharpening and maintenance 9

The group that makes the cutting group work. A workshop without it owns edge tools that are sharp only when new.

  • Coarse sharpening stone: A rectangular coarse grey sharpening stone on a wooden baseEssential

    Coarse sharpening stone

    Around 250 to 400 grit, for reshaping a damaged edge or removing a nick. It cuts steel quickly and leaves scratches that the fine stone then removes, so it is never the last step.

  • Fine sharpening stone: A rectangular fine white sharpening stone on a wooden baseEssential

    Around 1000 to 4000 grit, producing the edge you actually cut with. Most sharpening is thirty seconds on this alone, with the coarse stone reserved for when something has gone wrong.

    A roller jig that holds a blade at a fixed angle on the stone. It makes the angle repeatable, which matters because an inconsistent angle means starting the bevel again every time.

    Leather charged with abrasive compound that removes the wire edge left by a stone. A few passes takes an edge from sharp to noticeably sharper, and it takes seconds between cuts.

    A fine triangular file sized to a saw's tooth pitch, for sharpening a traditional saw. It is what lets a good saw last decades, and it does nothing at all for a hardpoint blade.

    Pliers that bend alternate teeth outward so the kerf is wider than the blade. Without set, a saw binds in its own cut, which no amount of sharpening will fix.

    Wire bristles that clear swarf pinned in file teeth. A pinned file scratches instead of cutting, and this restores it in seconds, which is why it belongs next to the files rather than in a drawer.

    A thin spout for oiling a vice screw, a plane sole and any bare steel before storage. Rust is the most common cause of a hand tool becoming unpleasant to use, and this is the whole prevention.

    Clears rust, scale and old glue off metal and off the bench. Unglamorous, and the difference between a tool that is put away working and one that is put away deteriorating.

Equipping a workshop with hand tools

Buy holding first, then marking, then cutting. Most half finished workshops have it the other way round.

Buy holding before cutting

The most common mistake in a new workshop is a drawer of saws and chisels and nothing to hold the work. Every cutting tool assumes the workpiece is rigid, and hand pressure is nowhere near enough for that.

A bench with a vice fitted, plus half a dozen clamps, changes what every other tool in the room can do. It is also the least exciting money you will spend, which is exactly why it gets postponed.

A vice first
Everything else assumes the work is held. This is the purchase that unlocks the rest of the kit.
More clamps than you think
Nobody has ever finished a glue-up wishing they owned fewer. Six is a start, not a set.
Soft jaws
Hardened serrations print into anything finished. A pair of covers costs almost nothing and saves real work.

Accuracy is bought at the marking stage

No cutting tool can be more accurate than the line it follows. A square that is not square, or a tape that reads differently from your rule, puts an error into everything made in the room and it will not be obvious where it came from.

Buy one good square and one good rule and treat them as the references everything else is checked against. Check the square against itself by scribing a line, flipping it, and scribing again: if the two lines diverge, the square is wrong.

One reference each
One square, one rule. Two of either that disagree is worse than owning one, because you will not know which to trust.

Knife beats pencil
A marking knife severs fibres and gives the saw or chisel a wall to register against. A pencil line is three times wider.

Sharpening is a capability, not a chore

A blunt chisel is not a chisel. Until you can put an edge on a tool, buying more edge tools does nothing, because they all arrive usable and all become blunt within an afternoon of real work.

The kit is small: a coarse and a fine stone, a honing guide if you want repeatability, and something flat to strop on. That is enough to keep every edge in the room working, and it is a smaller outlay than one good plane.

Two grits is enough
Something coarse to reshape and something fine to hone. Elaborate stone collections come much later, if ever.
Flat matters most
A dished stone puts a curve on the edge. Flatten the stone before blaming the technique.
Hone often, grind rarely
Thirty seconds every few uses beats a full regrind once a year, and the tool is sharp the whole time.

The right hammer for the material

Hammer faces are hardened to different degrees on purpose. A ball pein is hardened to strike steel punches and chisels. A claw hammer face is softer, for nails, and striking a hardened punch with one can chip the face and send a fragment flying.

Soft faced mallets and hammers exist so you can move something without marking it. Assembling a joint or seating a bearing with a steel hammer leaves a permanent record of the fact.

Hardened face, made to strike punches and cold chisels. The right tool whenever the target is another tool.
Claw for nails only
Softer face. Using it on a hardened punch risks chipping it, and a chip travels fast.
Soft face for finished work
Rubber, hide or nylon moves a part without printing a dent into it.
Dress mushroomed heads
A punch or chisel with a spread head throws fragments. File it back, it takes a minute.

A sensible buying order

Holding first: bench, vice, clamps. Then marking: rule, square, marking knife, pencil. Then the general cutting tools: a panel saw, a hacksaw, a chisel or two, a file. Then sharpening. Then fastening.

Beyond that, let the jobs decide. A tool bought for a specific job you actually have gets used; a tool bought because it completes a set usually does not. This is a better filter than any list, including this one.

Frequently asked questions

What hand tools do I need to start a workshop?

Which should I buy first, a vice or a set of clamps?
A vice, because it holds work rigidly enough for sawing, filing and chiselling, which clamps alone struggle to do. Then clamps immediately after, since a vice holds one thing in one place and most assembly needs several things held at once.
How many clamps do I need?
More than you plan to buy. Six is a workable start for small work, and a glue-up of any size will use every one you own. Sash cramps for panels and F clamps or trigger clamps for general holding cover most situations between them.
Do I need both a woodworking vice and an engineer's vice?
If you work in both materials, yes. A woodworking vice has wide flat wooden-faced jaws that grip a board without marking it. An engineer's vice has narrow hardened serrated jaws that hold steel rigidly. Each is poor at the other's job.
What is the difference between a ball pein and a claw hammer?
A ball pein has a hardened face for striking punches and cold chisels, plus a rounded pein for peening. A claw hammer has a softer face for nails and a claw for pulling them. Striking a hardened punch with a claw hammer can chip the face.
Are hand tool sets worth buying?
Rarely. Sets are priced on piece count, so most of the contents are sizes or types you will not use, and the quality of the pieces you do use is lower than buying those few individually. The exception is genuinely graduated sets like sockets, drill bits and hex keys.
What sharpening equipment does a workshop need?
A coarse stone to reshape an edge, a fine stone to hone it, and something flat to strop on. A honing guide helps if you want a repeatable angle. That is enough to keep every chisel, plane and knife in the room working, and it costs less than one good plane.
How should I store hand tools?
Dry, off the floor, and where you can see them. A damp shed floor is enough to pit steel over one winter, and a tool you cannot find gets replaced rather than used. A wall rack or shadow board also tells you at a glance what is missing.
